Stephen F. Murphy Biography

Stephen Murphy is a senior management professional with more than 20 years experience in sales and marketing. He is a creative leader with a superior knowledge of technology to direct an organization and client base in facilitating and communicating its purpose. He is experienced in government and corporate sales of paid and unpaid media, advertising, market research/focus groups, new media, and multicultural outreach.

He is co-owner of The Media Network, a minority-owned social marketing firm in Silver Spring, MD. The firm has 20 full-time staff and provides marketing communications and public education campaign services primarily to the Federal government. Prior to that he was President of the sole proprietorship, The Media Network, that predated the incorporated company.

Prior to setting up his own firm, Stephen was a senior executive at public relations agency in Bethesda Maryland that provided radio news services to corporations, associations and government. A native of England, Stephen enjoyed a diverse marketing career in the UK in theater, music and the arts.

Stephen has sold public relations and marketing services to clients such as Microsoft, EDS, US Department of Health and Human Services, US Department of Energy, Environmental Protection Agency, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as well as public relations agencies such as Ketchum Communications, Porter Novelli, Burson Martsellar, and Ogilvy Adams Rinehart. He has also worked with dozens of prime contractors and consulting companies such as Booz Allen, Lockheed Martin, ICF International, and SAIC.


Stephen has always been ahead of the curve in technology having, in the 1980s, been an early adopter of a brick sized cell phone which he used to advance call the media on a 50th anniversary march and theatrical program in the UK thus generating international press coverage. In 1993, he founded one of the first radio news sites on the Internet generating interest from what would become powerful names in an exploding new medium. Stephen has used his knowledge of media and technology to encourage the US Federal Government to adopt social media programs, communication dissemination techniques that are now often mandated in Federal agencies.

Stephen has developed, installed, and trained staff numerous project management and selling tools including focus group recruitment, media relations and proposal databases, websites and extranets and has specific expertise with tools such as Salesforce, Vocus, and Workzone (Extranet).

Stephen has a Bachelor Of Arts In Communications, from American University, Washington, D.C. He has authored publications such as: Radio - A Primer for Public for Public Relations Professionals, 1991, NewsFeeds Etcetera, an Audio News Release Handbook, 1992, The Official RadioTour Handbook, 1993, The Virtual Journalist, a Guide to Online Resources for Journalists, 1994.

Stephen is based in Silver Spring MD, has a 12-year-old son and belongs to groups such as the
Mankind Project and Stillwater Meditation Practice Center. He is a graduate of The Landmark Forum and speaks conversational Spanish and is fluent in Mac and iPhone speak. His current favorite application is Jott.
